Cover Story Feng and co-workers propose a “single-atom site on a chip” strategy for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), enabling highly sensitive and quantitative Raman detection of multiple analytes. This strategy is realized by modifying monodispersed sites of single tungsten atom oxide on a lead halide perovskite substrate, leading substantial advances in noble-metal-free SERS materials. Ultrahigh enhancement factor and quantitative linear SERS responses are verified using rhodamine, tyrosine and cytosine. The single-atom sites on a chip strategy can also be applied in a portable Raman platform with high sensitivity comparable to that on a benchtop instrument, which can be readily extended to point-of-care testing or in-vitro detection of various biomolecules (see the article on page 1601).
